Abstract
Tribal communities play a crucial role in safeguarding India's genetic resources. They mostly live in forest areas, hills and islands. Tuber crops are cultivated by tribes and are used as food and for medicinal needs. The conventional food systems of indigenous tribes are treasures of knowledge passed on to generations. India is adorned with diversified variety of edible plants which supports the food basket of the tribes and help alleviate food scarcity. The major tuber crops cultivated in tribal areas are cassava, sweet potato, elephant foot yam, yams, taro and also minor tubers like Chinese potato, arrowroot etc. Tribes rely heavily on tubers as it provides cheap source of carbohydrate and energy in addition to fibre, calcium, iron, and vitamins. Tuber crops have antioxidant, hypoglycemic, hypocholesterolemic, antimicrobial and immunomodulatory effects. Tubers are effective against dysentery, diarrhoea, piles, wounds, injuries, and other stomach related issues. This review article gives a comprehensive overview of how different tribal communities across India utilize these tuber crops in their daily lives, highlighting their significance beyond basic nourishment.
