An updated checklist of marine and coastal fishes of Odisha, India

Abstract

Exploring diversity is a never-ending process where new species are discovered while others face extinction. Research on taxonomy is indispensable for the study of species diversity, distribution, richness, risk of extinction, and conservation management strategies. The coastline of India is rich in marine habitats that host diverse fish species, and the coastal waters of Odisha are known for its dynamic environment, unique habitat composition, and ongoing species discoveries. The current study identified 778 fish species in the marine and coastal waters of Odisha, which are grouped into 36 orders, 143 families, and 402 genera, through a thorough literature review. Categorisation of all the species listed in IUCN revealed 15 species are in the Critically Endangered group, 25 Endangered, 31 Vulnerable, 17 Near Threatened, 478 Least Concern, 80 Data Deficient, and 132 Not Evaluated. The checklist focuses on gathering information on marine fishes found in coastal and brackishwater environments of Odisha, prioritising taxonomic verification and adjustments. The originality of the research stems from correcting past misidentifications and refining nomenclature according to contemporary taxonomic criteria. This updated checklist with habitat and conservation status will provide a platform for the development of a very strong conservation and management strategy along the marine and coastal waters of Odisha.
