नेगमम कॉटन साड़ियाँ पारंपरिक हैंड वोवन फैब्रिक हैं जो इस क्षेत्र के ऐतिहासिक महत्व को दर्शाती हैं। यह शोध-पत्र नेगमम कॉटन साड़ियों के अस्तित्व के पीछे निहित हिस्टोरिकल, ज्योग्राफिकल और टेक्निकल फैक्टर्स पर चर्चा करता है। इस पेपर में मुख्य रूप से पारंपरिक वीविंग प्रैक्टिसेज़, देवांग चेट्टियार कम्युनिटी के माइग्रेशन, तथा लोकल क्लाइमेट के कॉटन वीविंग पर प्रभाव जैसे पहलुओं को शामिल किया गया है। हाई ह्यूमिडिटी लेवल के कारण या र्नब्रिटल हो जाता है, जिसके चलते इस का प्रभाव विशेषरूप से महत्वपूर्ण रहा है। नेगमम कॉटन साड़ियों को बनाने में प्रयुक्त टेक्निकल प्रोसेसेज़ में वार्प और वेफ्ट दोनों के लिए "80's काउंट कॉटन यार्न" का उपयोग तथा प्रति इंच 86-90 की हाईपिक्स पर इंच शामिल है। वीवर्स साड़ी के वेट और बॉडी को मीडियम बनाए रखने का भी विशेष ध्यान रखते हैं। सामान्यतः साड़ी की लंबाई 7.3-8.2 मीटर होती है। डॉबी या जैकार्ड अटैचमेंट का उपयोग करते हुए एक्स्ट्रा-वेफ्ट पैटर्न्स पिट लूम पर बनाए जाते हैं। संक्षेप में, नेगमम कॉटन साड़ियाँ एक्सेप्शनल स्किल से निर्मित पारंपरिक वीविंग आइटम्स हैं, जो लोकल क्लाइमेट के अनुरूप एडाप्ट हुई हैं।
Abstract
The Negamam cotton sarees are traditional hand-woven fabrics that depict historical significance in the region. This paper discusses the historical, geographical and technical factors behind the existence of the Negamam cotton sarees. The main aspects covered in the paper include the traditional weaving practices and migration of the Devanga Chettiar community and the effect of local climate on cotton weaving. The latter played a significant role due to the high level of humidity that tends to make the yarn brittle. The technical processes used in making the Negamam cotton sarees involve using “80’s count of cotton yarn” for warp and weft and a high number of picks per inch – 86-90. The weavers also make sure to keep the saree medium in terms of weight and body. Most commonly, the saree is 7.3-8.2 m long. The extra-weft patterns using dobby or jacquard attachment are made on a pit loom. To summarize, the Negamam cotton sarees are traditional weaving items made with exceptional skill and adapted to the local climate.
