From Vedic rishis to swaraj: PC Ray's Masterpiece of Chemistry

Abstract

Written nearly 125 years ago, Prafulla Chandra Ray's monumental book, "A History of Hindu Chemistry," dispelled the misconception among European and Arab scholars that science originated in the West. Ray compiled and presented the contributions of great Hindu sage-scientists – such as Nagarjuna, Charaka, and Sushruta – from the Vedic period to the 16th century. He brought their work, preserved in original manuscripts (such as Rasaratnasamuccaya and Rasaprakasha Sudhakara), to the world by documenting, translating, and elaborating on their contributions in the fields of chemistry, mercury and zinc extraction, and medicinal processes. The book is divided into two parts: the first deals with Vedic-Ayurvedic principles, and the second with medieval practical chemistry. The book's content conclusively proved that Indian Hindu chemistry predates European alchemy by centuries, including the synthesis of alkalis and caustics, a technique mentioned in European texts only around 1755 CE. Through in-depth study of ancient Sanskrit texts, scholarly assistance, and experimental verification, Ray validated ancient Indian knowledge, refuting Arabic translations and European misconceptions. This book disseminated the knowledge of Hindu chemistry worldwide and presented it to the modern world. It became a symbol of national pride and instilled the belief that India's scientific past is the foundation of its future.
