Abstract
A. sativum, A. afra, X. undulatum, B. montana
Abstract
Many studies have documented medicinal plants used for various ailments in South Africa; however, few focus on paediatric health. This study documented plants used to treat paediatric ailments in Thaba ‘Nchu, Free State Province, South Africa through interviews with 30 traditional health practitioners. A total of 60 plant species were reported, representing 57 genera and 33 families. Fidelity Level (FL) values ranged from 20% to 76.67%, with the highest FL recorded for B. montana (76.67%). Informant consensus was highest for bronchitis (ICF = 1.00), with moderate agreement for vomiting, weakness, chest pain, diarrhoea and ear infections. Key plants identified include P. hottentotta for bronchitis, P. reniforme for vomiting, and several species such as A. sativum, A. afra, X. undulatum, B. montana and H. depressa for chest pain.
