Battery thermal management systems are essential to ensure the safety, capacity and lifespan of lithium-ion batteries for on-board use in electric vehicles. This study proposes a new 3D numerical model to investigate the thermal performance of a 24-cell battery pack consisting with various discharge power rates and 30°C ambient temperature.
The numerical and experimental results showed good agreement, with percentage errors ranging from 0.32% to 7.55% across the nine cases. Without cooling, the maximum battery temperature reached 59.6°C at 3C, exceeding the recommended operating range. Phase Change Material (PCM) cooling reduced the peak temperature to 55.02°C, while Nano enhanced PCM further reduced it to 50.84°C. Nano enhanced PCM also improved temperature uniformity within the battery module by enhancing heat absorption and dissipation. The superior performance of Nano enhanced PCM is attributed to its enhanced effective thermal conductivity compared with conventional PCM. Overall, the results demonstrate that Nano enhanced PCM-based Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) provides better thermal regulation than conventional PCM and offers a promising approach for safe and reliable Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIB) operation under high discharge conditions.
