From Recognition to Reality: Challenges in Protecting Assamese Jewellery Post-GI

Abstract

The study provides deep insights into the challenges faced by the artisans of Traditional Assamese Jewellery sector in light of the recent grant of Geographical Indication (GI) status to this traditional handicraft. Known for its intricate artistry and deep cultural significance, Traditional Assamese Jewellery embodies an important intangible heritage. Though GI status represents a significant milestone, market saturation, volatility in raw material prices, and the proliferation of counterfeit products are some of the persistent challenges that are threatening sustainability of this industry. This study explores the potential of GI as a tool for safeguarding cultural heritage, facilitating economic development, and enhancing its recognition in global market. Visit to traditional workshops or ‘Shaals’ of Rantholi, a prominent hub for production of Traditional Assamese Jewellery in Nagoan district, Assam, unveiled many lesser-known facets of the industry that can be attributed to gradual disinterest among the artisans. Through qualitative analysis, the paper evaluates whether GI protection alone will be sufficient to ensure the craft’s authenticity, integrity, and economic sustainability.
