People residing in this village are dependent on Dhaparla reservoir (surface water) for their drinking water source. &nbsp;However, water quality has become a serious concern due to high turbidity and the presence of yellowish colour in the water sample, which persists even after treatment. Turbidity was found to be 40 NTU in the Dhaparla reservoir before treatment. To resolve this issue, a jar test study was conducted by using different dosages of coagulants and disinfectants by which turbidity was reduced up to 17.3 NTU after the treatment of appropriate dosing of Poly Aluminium Chloride (PAC) and bleaching powder. Though turbidity of the water sample surpassed allowable limits which is the false turbidity caused by algal growth (blue-green algae). The O&amp;M of the water treatment plant become a challenge due to turbidity of raw water. Bacterial contamination in the water samples is attributed to unprotected catchment and due to animal grazing, bird droppings, open defecation. en-route contamination like pipeline leaks. The investigation involved analyzing the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of groundwater to determine its appropriateness for consumption. Various factors such as pH levels, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Total Hardness (TH), as well as the presence of specific cations like Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, anions such as Cl-, F-, NO3-, and heavy metals like Zn, Fe, and As were examined across samples collected during different seasons - Pre-monsoon, Monsoon, and Post-monsoon. The recorded values for each parameter were compared against the drinking water standards established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) as per IS 10500: 2012. On one hand, construction needs more material and on the other, waste material from anthropogenic activities produces large volumes of byproducts like fly ash and water treatment plant sludge that requires proper disposal. &nbsp;Two waste by-products namely, drinking water treatment plant sludge of Bhandup Water Complex of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and high calcium fly ash from Trombay Thermal Power Plant have been used in synthesis of geopolymers. Mixture of Sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide solutions were used as the liquid alkaline activating solution. Influence of various factors such as molar ratios of SiO<sub>2</sub>:Na<sub>2</sub>O of activating solution, SiO<sub>2</sub>:Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3 </sub>of the mix, Na:Al of the mix, curing temperature and time period were studied. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) tools were used &nbsp;&nbsp;to understand the influence of various factors on geopolymer specimens. Statistically, molar ratios of Na/Al affect the geopolymerization process as reflected in the measurement of compressive strength of the samples. The others did not show any statistically significant influence on the process. Green innovative technologies (GIT) comprise any innovations that contribute to the development of major products, services, or processes that reduce environmental harm, impact, and degradation while increasing natural resource usage. The overview of the importance and scope of industrial waste management, highlighting the need for sustainable practices was reviewed in this manuscript. Traditional waste remediation methods were discussed, emphasizing their limitations and adverse environmental impacts. In contrast, the principles of green and eco-friendly technologies are introduced, emphasizing their potential to minimize environmental harm and achieve a circular economy.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">It focuses on various green technologies for industrial waste remediation, such as biofilters, bioreactors, physio-chemical methods, etc. Additionally, it explores the use of blockchain and IoT (Internet of Things) in waste remediation. This review underscores the need to transition towards green and eco-friendly technologies for industrial waste remediation. Seedlings <p>The increasing industrialization and modernization have resulted in introducing varieties of contaminants including heavy metals in soil, which directly and/ or indirectly negatively affect plant species. Lead (Pb) is a powerful toxicant that affects many physiological and metabiological processes in plants, leading to Pb toxicity. The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of various concentrations of Pb on the growth of <em>Brassica nigra </em>and to understand its bioaccumulation efficiency. Soils supplemented with Pb (10-100 ppm) were used to grow <em>Brassica nigra </em>and<em> Cicer arietinum </em>seeds under controlled conditions. The in vitro experiments proved that with increasing Pb concentration, there was retardation in the growth of the plants. The concentration of 100 ppm adversely affected the seed germination, root and shoot length, biomass, and chlorophyll content with noticeable effects on plant cells. However, the plants were able to accumulate a significant amount of Pb with increasing concentration. The results provided a hope to use such phyto- accumulators as an environment-friendly, cost-effective, and clean method for the treatment of metal-contaminated soils, and also contributing towards sustainable agriculture.</p> Mercy John Sylvia C Neha Pandey Copyright (c) 2024 Journal of Indian Association for Environmental Management (JIAEM) 2024-04-25 2024-04-25 44 1 45 51 Air Pollution and Particulate Matter in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area, India <p>A recent report from the US-based Health Effects Institute (HEI) has identified Delhi and Kolkata as the two most polluted cities, in terms of exposure to hazardous fine particulate matter (PM<sub>2.5</sub>). In order to tackle this issue, regulatory measures were implemented in Kolkata in 2018 to meet the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). This study aims to analyze the levels of PM<sub>2.5 </sub>in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area (KMA) from 2021 to 2023. The findings indicate that the main sources of PM<sub>2.5 </sub>are transportation, households, and industries, although their contributions vary across the metropolitan area. The mean and median concentrations of PM<sub>2.5</sub> are highest in Kolkata and its adjacent areas, including Bidhannagore and New Town Kolkata. As increase in population the Indian automobile sector grew sharply because of rise in demand of automobiles, Lead acid battery is used for starting, lightning and ignition purposes in automobiles, so consequently rise in LAB application. LAB have an array of application in day today life in various forms but after certain period they become obsolete i.e. become part of waste. So, for meeting the demand present and future generations, recycling of waste LAB becomes necessary. But, If these waste Lead acid battery takes informal pathways, then it poses health and ecological challenges along with resources scarcity. In the present study we are focusing over the present status of lead acid battery waste management in National Capital Region of Delhi India. Furthermore, this study shows the linkages between unsustainable recycling and DALY.
